The old saying is, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. In the case of Brian Boland, one man’s art is another man’s trash. Boland is the creator of the Vermontasaurus, a massive 25-foot-tall by 122-foot-long sculpture of a dinosaur made from scrap wood he found on the 52-acre Post Mills Airport, which Boland owns and runs. Some folks love the Vermontasaurus, but others hate it and now the massive piece of found art is on the endangered species list.
According to state official, Vermontasaurus isn’t just art, it’s also technically a dwelling. Since Boland originally conceived the beast as being a place where people can gather around/under, that makes it a structure like a gazebo or deck, which requires a $272 permit. Under Vermont Act 250, Boland also faces an additional $150 charge as he made a “substantial” change to an existing property by turning a big pile of scrap wood into something interesting.
Sometimes it just doesn’t pay to let your creativity shine through, especially in a way that ticks off the neighbors. It’s not like he built a giant metal Transformer or something crazy! He simply built something out of garbage wood!
