Germany’s Autobahn, or A40 to the locals, is one of the most famous roads in the world. After all, there’s no speed limit, so drivers can drive as fast as they want. Hence its fame; who doesn’t want to put the pedal to the metal and roar down the highway? Interestingly, the Autobahn was in the news on Sunday not for its speed, but its stillness. To create the world’s longest table, a 37-mile section of the Autobahn between Duisburg and Dortmund was closed down for art purposes.
The living sculpture was called “Still Life.” Hundreds of individual tables were connected together, bit by bit, to set a world’s record. An estimated 3 million people turned out for the celebration/art event, which is also part of a larger celebration of the Ruhr area of Germany. It’s one of the European capitals of culture for 2010, dontcha know!
