One of the big things that’s harmed Playboy’s cachet is the fact that the magazine contains topless women. Aside from that, there’s a lot of great stuff in the magazine. I mean, all sorts of noteworthy notables have contributed articles, there’s jokes and humor, and they’re one of the few magazines that still features short fiction from mainstream authors. The Playboy style influenced an entire generation of lad’s magazines like Maxim and FHM; now Playboy is getting into the game by launching a safe-for-work version of their website called The Smoking Jacket.
“A lot of our audience logs on after work and we saw that we were missing a golden opportunity to reach guys when they’re online the most: when they’re sitting at their desk, not working, sending emails to their friends,” said Playboy editorial director Jimmy Jellinek, who describes Hugh Hefner’s traditional smoking jacket as ‘a jukebox of cool.’ The plan is to leverage Playboy’s brand name, the Playmates (in bikinis), and the magazine’s print content, but package it in a nudity-free way. Maybe it’ll help bolster the company’s finances by reaching out to a new audience!
