Manchester United is one of the best-known, best-loved, and best soccer clubs in the world. They’re the New York Yankees of the English Premier League, and as such they’re known throughout the world. However, there’s one place your Man U jersey will get you into serious trouble (err, besides Liverpool). Muslim leaders in Malaysia have banned the Manchester United’s jersey, saying the football club’s red devil mascot is un-Islamic.
“You are only promoting the devil,” said one Muslim leader in the Asian country. “This is very dangerous. As a Muslim we should not worship the symbols of other religions or the devils,” another added, ignoring the fact that some 7,000 Malaysian Muslims make up the country’s Manchester United Fan Club and there are an estimated 81 million Man U nuts in Asia. “It will erode our belief in Islam. There is no reason why we as Muslims should wear such jerseys, either for sports or fashion reasons.”
What if a Muslim actually suited up for Man U as a player? Would that change their minds, or would they continue to follow the same 6th Century mindset they have this entire time? It makes you wonder, doesn’t it. Man U will take on the MLS All-Stars in Los Angeles on July 28.
