It’s apparently update day here at PopFi. On Friday of last week, I wrote about BrewDog’s 100-proof beer served in a dead animal, known as The End Of History. Well, a Dutch brewer by the name of Jan Nijboer has announced that it’s time to start the future with, appropriately, Start The Future. It’s the world’s new strongest beer, checking in at over 120 proof (that’s 60 percent alcohol!) It’s an international arms race featuring hops and barley!
Jan Nijboer, who is the owner of t’ Koelschip, or The Refrigerated Ship, says that the move is the latest in a game of one-upsmanship between the Ship and Scotland-based BrewDog. BrewDog puts out Tactical Nuclear Penguin; ‘t Koelschip puts out Oblix. BrewDog tops it with The End of History; Nijboer responds with Start The Future. I’m not sure what’s next! Can they push the limits and roll out some sort of 130 proof beer? Is it even beer at that point, or is it paint stripper with a hoppy aftertaste?
Both sides should send me samples of this brew; as an American, I’m an impartial arbiter between the two warring factions. I don’t have a dog in the fight, so I’m able to tell you which of the ultra-strong beers is the best of the bunch. In the words of Mr. Nijboer, “It has become a little competition, you should see it as a joke.” Respectfully I say, competition is never a joke.
