Last year, I saw my first Christmas-themed holiday commercial on Halloween, during a showing of the movie Halloween on AMC during my morning break at work. I thought, at that time, that it was starting earlier than ever before. As it turns out, British retailer Selfridges has decided to start Christmas at the beginning of August.
Ordinarily, I’d dismiss this as a publicity stunt, like I dismissed the Christmas in July at the Milton Arms Hungry Horse. However, this is a trend with Selfridges. Last year, they started this stuff on August 8, and now they’re starting it on August first. Maybe next year, they’ll kick their Christmas off in July, too, with some sort of summer-themed Krampus in a Hawaiian shirt and straw hat.
This is horrible news; I can understand wanting to bilk tourists for as much as possible, and I can understand that people might want to plan for Christmas-themed weddings and the like, but this is just too much to handle. My brain isn’t prepared for this; one day soon, we’ll be debuting combination decorations covering Halloween, Christmas, and Easter all in one fell swoop.
