I have no doubt that Tristan and Bob Vanech have played one another in Scrabble many, many times at the family home in Venice, California. However, how often is is that a father and son play one another at the National Scrabble Championship? Well, that’s just what happened at the Hotel InterContinental in Addison, Texas, site of the National Scrabble Championship this year where 14-year-old Tristan played and lost to his father Bob during the $10,000 winner-take-all tournament.
“There was a genuine parenting moment where I thought, ‘I can’t beat him,'” said Bob Vanech of his match versus his son. “But then I also didn’t want my score lowered by losing.” Tristan blames his loss on overconfidence, saying, “Maybe I got too cocky.” The pair played one another due to their close ranking; the final word played by winner Bob was “defeated.” Fortunately for all us letter-heads, their game remained civil and no one got stabbed in the neck.
