Ford Motor Company has realized that the Mustang has lost a little sparkle. Once the premier muscle car of its era, the Ford Mustang has become lost in a sea of other cars that are as fast or faster and as good-looking or better. However, Ford executives have an idea of how to put the kick back in their pony car, and that’s reaching back into the past. Ford has announced that they’re resurrecting the Ford Mustang Boss 302.
The goal was to create a “successful, race-bred, worthy successor to the original Boss 302. For us that meant a production Mustang that could top one of the world’s best, the 2010 BMW M3, in lap times at Laguna Seca,” said Ford group VP Derrick Kuzak. Thanks to increased air intake, a 440-horsepower engine, a stiffer body, and 19-inch racing wheels, Ford just might have done that.
All it takes is one removed part (a restricting plate) to turn the Mustang from street-legal to racing machine. Hence the second Boss 302 announced, the racing-style Laguna Seca. It features no back seat, an x-shaped body brace, and an even-bigger air-sucking hood scoop. “This is as close as you’re going to get to a racing car with a license plate,” says Mustang chief engineer Dave Pericak.
