For 10 days, one unlucky little bear cub has been trapped in a hell of his own creation. While eating out of a dumpster in Weirsdale, Florida, the little black bear cub known as Jarhead got his head stuck in a jar while reaching for some food. The helpless and handcuffed officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (or FWC) could only watch the bear get hungrier and hungrier for 10 days, since the bear’s mother wouldn’t let anyone get close to her helpless baby.
When the bears disappeared for two days, officials feared the worst. Then, the mother and her two cubs (including Jarhead) returned. FWC officials were ready and waiting. They sprung into action, tranquilized the mother, wrestled Jarhead to the ground, pried off the bucket, and bingo, the bear was free and unharmed, albeit very hungry.
“{T]he tough little bear lived up to its US Marine moniker and did not give up without a fight,” the FWC said on its website. “Although the story appears to have a happy ending, it truly illustrates one of the worst things that can happen when wildlife gets into garbage.” It’s both tragic and adorable.
