In 1974, a young man born in a Nepalese fishing village named Indra Tamang met poet and author Charles Henri Ford, brother of actress Ruth Ford. The connection between the two was instant, and when he was offered passage to the United States, Tamang took it instantly. “”I was always hearing about America,” said the butler. “I took my chance and I came. I had no idea how the work was going to go and how long I would stay.” The stay lasted until 2009, when Tamang’s employer Ruth Ford passed away and turned her faithful butler into a multi-millionaire.
Ford, in her will, left her butler with two luxury apartments in The Dakota, as well as a valuable collection of art. That took Indra from a humble servant to a man rich enough to have his own butler overnight, as well as bringing him instant fame and notoriety. Of course, it’s not all peaches and gravy with the insta-famous millionaire butler, as finding money makes things difficult.
“I rather be Indra of yore. I rather live my own life than try to be someone else.” Indra still lives with his wife and three children in a modest two-family house in Queens, New York.
