Thanks to the changing world, movie studios everywhere are starting to feel the pinch of higher budgets and lower returns. Nowhere has the internet done more damage than to the adult film industry. Piracy is rampant, and the old ways aren’t cutting it anymore, so it’s time to turn up the spectacle. While 3-D was good for Playboy centerfolds, there needs to be more for filmed erotica. Enter 3-D Sex & Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, the world’s first porn film shot in IMAX 3-D!
“Somehow when you’re doing a 3-D movie you always want to make an impressive image because the viewers … are going to buy tickets with double or even triple the ticket price to get into a world they’ve never seen before,” said the film’s director, Christopher Sun. “It’s not just erotica, they want some ‘wow factor!.'” Sun hopes that his film can kick-start a lucrative IMAX 3-D erotica trend thanks to that spectacle.
Unfortunately, that spectacle comes at a cost, as shooting in IMAX 3-D requires both IMAX-quality cameras and film, but also different lighting, set design, and lenses. Oh yeah, the film also has a budget of $3 million dollars, which is astronomical by adult film standards. However, that hasn’t stopped other companies from jumping on the 3-D porn bandwagon: Hustler plans on making a 3-D adult spoof of Avatar, while Tinto Brass plans on marketing a 3-D version of his 1979 film Caligula.
Let’s just hope they stop before they get to 4-D movies.
