When I was a kid, I was a huge book nerd. Mind you, this was back before Al Gore invented the Internet, so pretty much everything you wanted to read or study or learn was in book form. To me, the library was heaven. There were comfortable chairs, lots of quiet nooks and crannies, and shelves full of books to read. I could’ve lived there; 26-year-old Charles A. Jones Jr. lived in a library for two weeks before he was discovered.
The homeless Jones camped out in the Ocean Township, New Jersey, library. He lived in the basement during the nights, bringing down books to read and stealing food from the employee break room to sate his hunger. He would’ve kept on living la vida library, except for the fact that he was caught peeking out of the window after closing hours by the custodian.
This must’ve been one of those nice, big libraries. I’d love to live in a big, old library building that’s several floors high, like the Library of Congress. Some libraries are just too cramped to stretch your legs in. Give me a library squat big enough for me to do laps around.
