If you live in the Pacific Northwest, odds are yesterday you heard a pair of massive explosion-sounding sonic booms that ripped through the area. No, it’s not some sort of announcement of President Barack Obama’s entrance into the area, it’s the result of an accident. A man moving his Cessna 180 floatplane from Lake Chelan to Lake Washington’s Kenmore Air facility caused authorities to scramble a pair of F-15 fighter jets, which caused the sonic booms as they ripped through the skies to investigate the incident.
So, why were fighters scrambled? Apparently, the pilot of the floatplane, Lee Daily, didn’t know that the President was in the area, so when he took to the skies, he violated a temporary no-fly zone. When officials saw the plane in the air, they took precautions and boom, F-15 Eagles gave Seattle residents a jolt hard enough to slosh their coffee. Fortunately, crisis was averted and Seattleites can go back to worrying about cybercrime.
“Oh my God, I can’t believe – is this the top news thing?” said Laura Joseph, the plane’s sole passenger. “I saw a jet, just a white jet going by,” she said of the plane’s escort. “I thought it was kind of odd to see a military jet.”
