Long ago, Roger Corman made a cheap little movie about piranha invading a freshwater lake during the height of swim season. Little did he know that his 1978 classic Piranha would inspire multiple remakes, including the upcoming Piranha 3-D. Now, the filming location for Piranha 3-D is getting a case of the nerves over fear that it could hurt their tourism trade. On the border between California and Arizona lies Lake Havasu, where Piranha 3-D was filmed. They’d like you to know that there are no actual piranhas in the lake.
“One woman was bringing up to me that the movie was coming out, and she asked – as serious as serious can be – ‘Oh, but are there still piranha in the lake?’” said Cal Sheehy, general manager of the London Bridge Resort on Lake Havasu. “At first, I kind of took it as a joke. But then I let her know that that’s the computer-generated part of the movie. And she was very relieved, saying, ‘Oh, I’m so glad to hear that.’”
So yes, rest assured that there are no piranhas in your local body of water, unless you live in Florida.
