At last year’s world championships, Caster Semenya ran away from the competition, literally, as she won the gold medal in the women’s 800 meters race. Of course, in post-race testing, there was a little problem: race officials weren’t sure what gender she was. As it turns out, after 11 months of extensive testing revealed a set of internal testes, Semenya is a girl. As such, she’s been allowed to return to running against the ladies, and she’s resumed her winning ways.
“It was not easy for a 19-year-old girl to go through what I’ve been through,”‘ said Semenya after winning the world title in 1’59. “I ran a good time, I felt at home. It’s been a long time since I raced a fast race. I just tried to go with them, to feel comfortable.” Despite the slow time, Semenya is busy preparing for the Diamond League (a series of track-and-field events) opening in Brussels. After all, the winning title race was only Semenya’s third race since returning to track; I’m sure she’s got a lot of rust to run off before she’s back to her winning ways.
