The Miss USA pageant has kind of fallen on hard times. Viewership is down, and even when the potential Miss USA has a naughty past and Miss England is a combat veteran, it’s not really enough to drive up interest in the overblown beauty pageant that has always been seen as an inferior version of the Miss America pageant. However, Miss Universe is a huge deal internationally, so there’s not much surprise that an international competitor, Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete, won the 2010 Miss Universe title last night.
Interestingly, most of Miss Universe’s questions weren’t about Mexico, but about America. Specifically, Arizona’s controversial new immigration law designed to keep out illegal border-jumpers. She answered not one, but two questions about it. “Every country has the right to impose and enact their laws,” said the newly-crowned Miss Universe. “But I tell you that all the Mexicans and the Latins that are living here in the United States are hardworking people — people who want to improve on their quality of life.”
Just the kind of answer you’d expect from a beauty queen. Carefully composed, but thoughtful and inoffensive to all sides.
