During 2008, American Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration spent most of the year at loggerheads over issues of safety and the timing of safety inspections regarding American’s 286 MD-80 jets. While the two sides argued over the wiring problems in the jets, American apparently didn’t take them out of the fleet; in fact, American made over 14,278 flights on jets with potentially faulty wiring, and now they’re gonna pay. The FAA has hit American Airlines with $24 million dollars in fines, the largest bunch of fines in history.
Eventually, American relented, called off some 3,000 flights, and made the required safety upgrades, but that doesn’t excuse their reckless behavior before giving into safety regulators. As Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said when he announced the fines, “There can be no compromises when it comes to safety.” Granted, there’ll probably be a compromise on the fines, but either way it’s going to be a whole lot of money that American will have to pay back.
