Airport officials were doing their customary bag searches at Bangkok, Thailand’s international airport when, during the process of screening, they found a Thai woman who had a backpack full of stuffed toy tigers. However, during the X-ray process, airport security saw something that looked strange, and it was obvious the woman was having difficulty handling her bag, so they took a look. Sleeping amongst the stuffed animals was a 2-month-old tiger cub that had been tranquilized.
The tiger was taken to an animal rehab facility while officials try to determine if it was born in the wild or if it is born in captivity. Despite its treatment, the tiger kitten seems to be in good health. As for the smuggler, she was arrested and detained for her not-so-subtle animal smuggling attempt.
“We applaud all the agencies that came together to uncover this brazen smuggling attempt,” said Traffic’s Chris Shepherd. “If people are trying to smuggle live tigers in their check-in luggage, they obviously think wildlife smuggling is something easy to get away with and do not fear reprimand. Only sustained pressure on wildlife traffickers and serious penalties can change that.”
