The old joke is that the average stripper is a coed trying to work her way through college. Everyone scoffs it off and continues to think that most strippers are dumb or drug addicts. As it turns out, at least in Great Britian, the average stripper is about as educated as the average person (or perhaps more so). A staggeringly high 25 percent of all British lap dancers surveyed had a college education, according to a research study done by the University of Leeds. Another 20 percent of them were currently taking college courses, with 14 percent undergraduates and 6 percent working on post-graduate education.
“These young women do not buy the line that they are being exploited, because they are the ones making the money out of a three-minute dance and a bit of a chat,” said Dr. Teela Sanders, one of the researchers on the study. “You have got to have a certain way about you to do it. They say 80 percent of the job is talking. These women do work hard for their money–you don’t just turn up and wiggle your bum.”
You know, maybe strippers are smarter than everyone gives them credit for being. I mean, the job is harder than you’d think and they have to do some athletic things while on the pole, but they do take home an average of $37,300-$74,500 dollars (24,000-48,000 British pounds) per year. That beats the tar out of my college workstudy check!
