The future of books just got a little brighter, literally. They also got easier to read, and apparently they added touchscreen capabilities. If you’re looking for an e-book reader, then Sony has a new carrot to dangle before your nose in the form of three newly-updated models of the Sony Reader series of e-readers. They all take advantage of E Ink’s new Pearl display technology, come in three sizes, and all offer a touch screen.
The new versions of Sony’s PRS-350 Pocket Edition, PRS-650 Touch Edition, and PRS-950 Daily Edition all have the same updated features, lighter brushed aluminum casing, included stylus for marking books (almost like a real book!), and 2 GB of built-in storage, but only the 7-inch Daily Edition has WiFi capability; the 5-inch Pocket Edition and 6-inch Touch Edition both come with a USB port and a Memory Stick Pro/SD card slot for adding new books rather than the ability to download directly.
Is the touch screen enough to lead you to pay $179 for the Pocket, $229 for the Touch, or $299 for the Daily, versus the $189 Kindle and $199 Nook? When you consider that the WiFi-enabled 6-inch Kindle is only $139, Sony’s $179 touchscreen seems less impressive.
