It’s one of the 90’s most enduring pop culture phenomenon. It spawned a whole miniature empire of spin-offs and remakes, made Tori Spelling into a household name, carried the Fox Network’s non-animated programming banner, and somehow remains an incredibly popular show to this very day. It’s Beverly Hills 90210, and today is officially 90210 Day since, you know, it’s 09/02/10.
To this day, this is one of the weirdest shows on television. For starters, look at that image above. Why is everyone fully dressed except for Shannen Doherty and Tori Spelling? Why does Ian Ziering not have a shirt on? Why does a middle-aged man (Ziering again) hang out with high schoolers? What’s the deal with his curly blond mullet? Is Steve Sanders the token ugly one of the group?
Yes, it’s a neat coincidence of the calendar, and sure, I’m in favor of any excuse to celebrate pop culture, but 90210 Day has nothing, and I mean nothing, on May the Fourth Be With You. We should be celebrating good shows, not bad soap operas featuring 33-year-old high school students in their 8th year at West Beverly High.
