It’s a wonderful day here in the United States. It’s a day in which all us hard-working men and all those hard-working women get to kick back, relax, and enjoy one last evening of fun and frivolity before the warm weather starts to end and the cold and harsh winds of winter resume whipping us like frosty whips wielded by the torment-minded Jack Frost. So, like most of you, I’ll be relaxing on the couch, sitting on the porch, or (if I’m lucky), eating some dead animal fresh off the grill.
While it’s a day for relaxing now, originally, Labor Day was a bribe. After a series of strikes, ultimately ended by President Grover Cleveland when he dispatched 12,000 troops to smash the striking unions (and resulted in two deaths), Labor Day was basically a gift from Cleveland in an attempt to make peace with the workers he had wronged previously. It didn’t work, as Cleveland lost the 1894 election, but Labor Day was a huge hit.
Who doesn’t love a good parade? Who doesn’t enjoy a TV marathon? Who wouldn’t love a free day off with pay? More importantly, who doesn’t love the unofficial start of football season?!
