Motown. The Motor City. The D. Detroit, Michigan, has many names. Now, it can add another nickname to its impressive list of monikers: Stressville, USA. Why does Detroit earn that new name? Well, according to Portfolio.com and bizjournals, Detroit is the most stressful metropolitan area in the United States. Detroit: what we lack in jobs, infrastructure, and education, we make up for in murder, heart attacks, and gloominess!
So what makes a city full of decaying ruins and stinky people so stressful? Well, the survey covered several quality of life areas in a 10-part formula: unemployment, income growth, poverty, deaths from circulatory system diseases, sunshine, unhealthy air, robberies, murders, commuting, and housing costs. Detroit’s 14.3 percent unemployment was a big part of its stress, which also included top 10 finishes in families in poverty, murder, robberies, heart attacks, and days without sun. Rock and roll road signs won’t make up for that.
Sunny Los Angeles was second place thanks to its high unemployment, most expensive housing, and second-worst air quality.
