It’s one of the most famous examples of vaporware in video game history. Duke Nukem Forever has been in the works since, literally, 1997. It’s been announced and pulled multiple times throughout its history, and has changed developers multiple times (3D Realms, Take Two, 3D Realms again, and now Gearbox Software). People have run through tens of millions of dollars on this game, completely changed graphics engines multiple times, and, in fact, have spent so much cash that it ran 3D Realms into the ground. It’s either a crowning achievement or spectacular folly, but Duke Nukem Forever will be coming out in 2011.
For those who have forgotten, Duke Nukem is the star of a series of crude video games which feature a muscle-bound, catchphrase-spouting hero blowing away aliens, rescuing strippers, and generally solving every problem with larger weapons, all the while making crude jokes, urinating to regain health, and generally exemplifying everything that is great and glorious about America. At the time, it was hugely controversial and one of the biggest successes in video game history. While I generally can’t play 3D games for very long, I have no doubt I’ll still check out this game when the time comes. Take off your pants, fire up the TV, and hail to the king of shoot-em-ups!
