From 1996 until 2001, Don Johnson was back in a big way thanks to a television cop show. No, it’s not related to Miami Vice, the show that shot a white-suited Johnson into the cultural zeitgeist, but the show Nash Bridges, about a San Francisco detective, his partner, and their misadventures that ran for over 122 episodes on CBS. Amazingly enough, the show is still on the air in 45 countries and Johnson has been trying to get what he’s been owed for several years now. Finally, thanks to a Los Angeles judge, Johnson has won a staggering $51.2 million dollar lawsuit against Rysher Entertainment, more than doubling his original judgment of $23.2 million!
“Nash Bridges was my project and I poured my heart into it,” Johnson said in a statement after the verdict. “I feel a sense of vindication and sincere gratitude that both the jury and Judge Stern continue to agree with me.” Johnson contends that, as co-creator of the show with Carlton Cuse, he’s owed half the copyright as well. That, and the fact that the show has been incredibly popular in syndication internationally, means Johnson is due a big payday, and may be in for as much as $25 million more depending on those revenues!
Man, making a TV show can be lucrative. Then again, the faster money comes in, the faster it gets spent.
