You’d think that in a world where millions of people go to bed hungry, a person who was able to grow a lot of food would be praised, not punished. However, Georgia farmer Steve Miller is being sued by Dekalb County for growing too many vegetables, among other things. County officials say Miller has been in violation of zoning laws since January, and just because the zoning laws have been changed that doesn’t absolve Miller of his responsibilities and/or punishments.
The only peace Miller has received was for two weeks during the rezoning of his farm. Once that was done, the county went after him for nearly $5000 in fines he accumulated under the old zoning law and while the rezoning was in progress. Hopefully Miller grew an extra $5000 worth of food to take care of the fines and assorted legal fees, otherwise he might be in for a busy winter trying to pay off his legal bills. Maybe it’s time to get creative with selling the farm-fresh produce by opening a 24-hour snack stand.
