There’s no doubt that Microsoft’s first big video game hit wasn’t Flight Simulator, but Halo. When the Xbox debuted in 2005, the thing that moved the system from shelves into homes was the brilliant first-person shooter Halo, developed by Bungie Software. Now, Bungie is leaving the Halo business, but not before setting first-day sales records. Halo: Reach sold over $200 million dollars-worth of copies in the US alone during its first 24 hours in stores. As it turns out, FPS games aren’t just good for the brain, they’re also good for a company’s bottom line!
It’s not the biggest debut in video game history, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 did $310 million in sales between the United States and Great Britain. However, this is still an incredible accomplishment for Microsoft, as Modern Warfare 2 was sold on several systems and in multiple countries at once. Halo: Reach is Xbox-exclusive. That’ll put a smile on the face of MS executives.
