National Football League player Kenny McKinley has been a little snake-bitten during his NFL career, meaning that pretty much everything that could go wrong with him has gone wrong. A fifth-round draft pick out of the University of South Carolina, McKinley made his biggest impact as a kick returner, but injuries have caused him to spend both the 2009 and 2010 NFL seasons on the injured reserve list. The body of 23-year-old Kenny McKinley was found inside his apartment, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“Everyone with the Broncos is shocked and saddened by the loss of Kenny McKinley,” said Broncos President and CEO Pat Bowlen. “He was part of the Broncos family and will be greatly missed by our organization. My most heartfelt condolences go out to Kenny’s family and friends.” The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the situation; the third such tragic death in the Broncos family in four years after corner back Darrent Williams was shot outside a nightclub on New Year’s Day 2007 and running back Damien Nash suffered a heart attack at a charity basketball game in February 2007.
