Las Vegas is America’s gambling mecca. Atlantic City is Vegas with the beach and Miss USA. And now, staking a gaming claim to fame, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With the construction of the $550-million-dollar SugarHouse Casino on the Delaware River waterfront, Philadelphia is now the largest city in the United States with its own casino. And what a casino it is!
The SugarHouse Casino, so named as it sits on the site of the former Jack Frost Sugar Refinery, is the 10th standalone casino or racino in Pennsylvania, and was one of the first to get approved, but the court battle has taken six years to resolve as residents were against having a gambling mecca in their neighborhood. The casino is going to have 1600 slot machines, 40 gaming tables, and a staff of 850 employees. Philadelphia is to receive 4 percent of SugarHouse’s gross profits, making it a pretty sweet deal for a city of 1.55 million people.
