In what is the least punk rock movie the band’s ever done (and they have a long history of being not punk rock), Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer of the band Green Day, is going to be heading to Broadway to join up with a show he ought to know pretty well. Green Day’s lead singer is joining the cast of the Green Day-inspired musical American Idiot for 8 performances. Between September 28 and October 3, Armstrong will be playing the role of drug dealer St. Jimmy in the Broadway musical, replacing actor Tony Vincent, who is off on personal leave.
After the stage appearance, Armstrong’s first, he’ll be leaving to tour South America with his band. Armstrong is the primary lyricist for the play, and he co-wrote the book it was based on with Michael Mayer. Needless to say, he ought to know the role, though whether or not he knows the words for any speaking St. Jimmy might need to do is questionable. I wonder how this will play out with Green Day’s fan base; odds are the kids won’t even know it happened.
Somewhere, Malcolm McLaren is smiling and nodding his approval.
