Gordon Ramsay is one of the most interesting characters on the screen. On his reality competition program Hell’s Kitchen, he’s the tough-talking, sarcastic, British chef who whips and whisks a group of aspiring chefs until he finds one perfect chef with the skill, talent, and personality to work alongside Ramsay in one of his many restaurants for a year. In his other program, Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, Ramsay himself goes into troubled eateries and restaurants with his goal being to turn the business around. Unfortunately, Ramsay might be able to turn around a business, but he can’t solve personal problems. New Jersey restauranteur Joseph Cerniglia, featured on Kitchen Nightmares, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in New York yesterday.
The 39-year-old bridge-jumper Cerniglia, who appeared on Kitchen Nightmares in 2007, is the second Ramsay-related suicide. In 2007, Hell’s Kitchen contestant Rachel Brown also committed suicide after her appearance on the reality cooking show. Granted, these aren’t Ramsay’s problem, as the suicides happened well after Ramsay left the picture (and the problems started well before Ramsay showed up), but still, it’s got to be a bit disturbing for future Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares cast members. Reality shows can be great, but they can also be awful.
