Jeez, it’s kind of a sad day today. First, Tony Curtis passes on. Then, I find out one of my favorite comedians, Greg Giraldo, died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs at age 44. It’s a bad time to be funny.
I’ll be honest, I don’t really know what to say. I didn’t know Greg Giraldo, but he’s one of those guys you feel like you know from seeing him on television. He was a fixture on Howard Stern’s radio show, he was on every single one of those Comedy Central celebrity roasts (and the TBS roast of Cheech and Chong), and he was always one of the funniest guys in the room at that particular brand of insult comedy. He had his problems with alcohol, but he was apparently on the rebound and had been sober for a few years before his accidental overdose.
One of the reasons Giraldo was so funny was because he was so smart. He was a Columbia and Harvard-educated lawyer before discovering his real talent at making people laugh, and it’s a shame that he passed on before he could find a proper vehicle for himself. It’s even sadder to note that he left behind three children. Sympathies for his family and friends.
