In spite of his good looks, Tony Curtis was one of the finest actors of his lifetime, blessed with oodles of charisma and a wonderful undercurrent of street-smarts and toughness that comes with growing up in The Bronx and New York City in the 20’s. He remained active in Hollywood and in charitable causes throughout his entire life, right up until the end, when Tony Curtis passed away at his Las Vegas home at age 85.
Not only was Curtis an actor, he was also a renowned painter, which he did throughout his life (but especially towards the end of his life). He’s also known as the face of the country of Hungary as he participated in a series of tourism ads in the US to improve the country’s image in the states. Curtis, born Bernard Schwartz, was a first-generation Hungarian-American born to Hungarian-Jewish immigrants.
Not only was he a great dramatic actor, he was also hilarious. If you’ve never seen Some Like It Hot with Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe, you’re missing out. Check out the clip above and tell me it’s not still brilliant work.
