Danny Lampley had a simple choice to make. He could either say the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag, or he could go to jail. Knowing that, by law, he is not required to say the pledge no matter what a judge might say, he chose to go to jail. Lampley spent five hours in jail after not reciting the pledge in Judge Talmadge Littlejohn’s courtroom.
Of course, he might be stuck with his jail term because A) he’s already served it and B) a judge can do pretty much whatever in a court room under the contempt of court rules. Even if it’s not against the law, a judge can give you contempt charges for it because those are very poorly-defined rules. This isn’t the first time Lampley has refuse to recite the pledge in Judge Littlejohn’s courtroom; previously, he left until the pledge was said, but this time he flat-out refused to join in.
Sometimes, you have to prove a point, I guess. Even if it means spending the afternoon in jail. I just wonder what’ll happen the next time these two cross paths?
