To a lot of people, Windows Phone 7 is the make-or-break release for Windows Mobile in the smart phone market. Either this allows them to continue to be a player in the industry, or they go the way of Palm and become a niche market or worse. The first Windows 7 smartphone has been announced in the form of the LG Optimus 7, and from the look of it, it’s pretty spectacular.
Perhaps most importantly, the Windows 7 phone looks nothing like the super-popular iPhone or Android phones: thankfully, Windows does its own thing here in terms of appearance. The touchscreen unit is 3.8 inches of space, making it a full-face touchscreen with three buttons under the screen. The embedded camera is an impressive 5 megapixel 720P HD unit. As for the phone itself, it contains an accelerometer, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and digital compass, just in case you want to try out a little motion gaming from the newly-revamped Microsoft Phone Marketplace.
I’m not sure I buy into the hype, but it looks interesting. I just hope developers come flocking to the Marketplace in a hurry to allow Windows Mobile to keep up with the Joneses.
