Yesterday just wasn’t a very good day for Junior Seau. The 41-year-old former NFL linebacker, who last played part-time in 2009 for the New England Patriots and has previously played for the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins, had it rough. First, overnight, he was arrested by police over allegations that he hit his 25-year-old girlfriend. That was bad, as was spending the night in jail. What is worse is, while on his way home from Carlsbad, California, Seau apparently fell asleep at the wheel and drove his Cadillac Escalade 100 feet off a cliff!
Seau was arrested at about midnight, and was in jail until about 3:30-4:00 AM. That’s not a whole lot of sleep, and I doubt he could sleep much in jail anyway. He didn’t really have time to get drunk or score drugs, so his story that he fell asleep at the wheel is probably the actual story of the events. Any time you drive with less than an optimum amount of rest, you run the risk of dozing off thanks to white line hypnosis.
Fortunately for Seau, he’s fine. His car, however, is not. Careening 75-100 feet down the side of a cliff and into a bunch of rocks isn’t exactly good for resale value, though it’s a testament to the car’s toughness that Seau is still with us.
