You won’t be able to poke her or become her friend, and odds are she won’t wish you a happy birthday, but Queen Elizabeth II is about to become the first reigning monarch of England to have her own Facebook profile. That’s right, the British Monarchy is officially joining Facebook, a year after the Queen and her minions established a Twitter feed for the Royals. The page will allow users to “like” the British Monarchy and will send out updates into your news feed like a standard Facebook profile.
Among the features of the Queen’s new social networking profile, the Court Circular will be uploaded on a daily basis. That’s the palace flier that records the previous day’s official engagements. The Facebook profile will be maintained as a joint venture of Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, and the Royal Collection. It will feature a list of official royal ceremonies and events on a searchable map of England. Prince William has already been prominently featured on several social media websites, though this is the Queen’s first foray onto Facebook.
Reportedly, the Queen routinely sends email and is a big proponent of the web. That said, I doubt she’ll be selling her old car on CraigsList any time soon.
