The couple met in 2002 at the University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland, where they shared a house. Now, 8 years later, their relationship has progressed to the next level. Britain’s second-in-line to the throne, Prince William, is set to marry his long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton in one of the most eagerly-awaited weddings in British history. The wedding is expected to take place sometime in 2011, the 30th anniversary of William’s parents marriage. No doubt the Queen’s Facebook status reflects the good news.
Given their long courtship, it’s no surprise the two would head to the aisle, but the length of the wait is what confounded most Brits. Indeed, Middleton was given the nickname “Waity Katie” by the British press. Interestingly, Middleton’s family is of no royal or aristocratic blood; instead, the Middletons are self-made millionaires who run a mail order toy and party goods company.
Still, the normal family life just might be what William wants, says royal commentator Margaret Holder. “What he’s finding with the Middleton family is what he didn’t have as a child and I think that’s very good for him. I think this is going to be a very, very good and successful marriage. And I think this will take the monarchy through well into the 21st Century. I think Kate is very modern, she’s very relevant.”
The speculation is the wedding will take place at Westminster Abbey, where Elizabeth II married. Hopefully, The Queen will loan the happy couple one of her awesome cars.
