If you want to be confused, look no further than Hangzhou, China. Town hall officials in that Chinese city have devised one of the most confusing and hard to understand road signs I’ve ever seen. On one side, there’s a human crossing a street at a crosswalk; on the other side, there’s a monkey crossing the street via crosswalk. If you’re confused, you’re not alone.
Even the locals don’t really get it. One said, “We have heard of zebra crossings but never a monkey crossing. What are we supposed to do, swing over the road?” A possible explanation was offered by another citizen of Hangzhou, who says the sign might be a bit of a gest, relating to an old Chinese proverb about putting a hat on a monkey. “It means to put a fool in a powerful position – and we have enough of those running the town!”
It makes the prostitute crossing and drunk crossing signs look positively easy to understand!
