Imagine a world in which Buffy The Vampire Slayer is not completely controlled by Joss Whedon. Well, that world is our current world, and soon, Buffy will be returning to the big screen without creator Whedon or any of the characters made famous by the television series. Whit Anderson, a 29-year-old actor, writer, and Buffy fan, and Atlas Entertainment are teaming up to write a big-screen Buffy reboot without Whedon’s involvement.
Amazingly, Buffy’s creator, Joss Whedon, does not own the rights to everyone’s favorite teenage monster slayer. The original 1992 film Buffy The Vampire Slayer and all assorted characters are owned by a combination of Fran and Kaz Kuzui and Dolly Parton and Sandy Gallin’s Sandollar Productions. That’s how Anderson and Atlas Entertainment were able to get the rights to Buffy and completely do an end-around to cut Joss Whedon out of the process.
Of course, I’m in the minority in that I’m kind of glad Whedon was cut out of the process. For all that mess about his ability to write strong female characters, I never saw anything other than a bunch of too-cute dialog and mediocrity. Then again, I never liked the Buffy TV series and an much more of a fan of the Buffy movie, which Whedon had very little to do with despite his screenwriting credit.
I’d imagine a female writer would have little difficulty getting into the head of a female character, and Anderson’s Buffy fandom should help allay fears she’ll mishandle their beloved geek icon. Said Anderson, “I didn’t really watch much television at all, but I always watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That was the one show I would watch when I got home. I just loved this character. I was the same age as Buffy, and it was so rare to have a female lead character on TV in those days who was strong and capable and smart but also allowed to be feminine.”
