The Download Police have struck again. In the United States Department of Justice’s never-ending war against downloaders, file-traders, and bootleggers, the DoJ, along with the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), have gone on the attack in cyberspace. Justice Department officials seized control of nearly 70 websites, ranging from the popular Torrent-Finder.com to websites selling knock-off designer clothing. It’s about time the government start taking over websites, rather than letting their websites get taken over.
Given the timing of the seizures, I can only imagine this is a move designed to improve shopper security on Cyber Monday. The best way to prevent people from accidentally clicking over to bad websites from legitimate online stores while searching for scarves or sunglasses is to put the clamps down on those getting rich off of gullible consumers. Still, you know what they say regarding a fool and his money. You’ll never be able to protect everyone from their own worst instincts, you can only make the task slightly more difficult for criminals.
