Volkswagen AG, the parent company of luxury car brand Porsche, has some big plans. Namely, they want to pass Toyota and GM to become the world’s largest automaker. They can’t do that with holes in their lineup, so to compete in the luxury crossover SUV market (an emerging car market), they’ve finally officially announced the worst-kept secret in the world. Porsche will be debuting the Porsche Cajun, a small luxury SUV, in 2013.
Think of the Cajun, which may not be the official title come 2013, as a little brother to Porsche’s wildly successful Cayenne SUV, only smaller. Porsche’s newest vehicle will help satisfy European demand for crossover SUVs while boosting the company’s CAFE fuel economy rating in the US. Alongside the supercharged, direct-injection 3.0 liter six-cylinder gas engine, Porsche will have hybrid and diesel models of the Cajun, making the Cajun a lean, green, luxury machine.
Porsche is aiming to move 150,000 vehicles worldwide, but Porsche chairman Matthias Muller claims that the company is adding car designs that fit Porsche’s vision, not simply adding vehicles to increase sales volume.
