In the never-ending battle to keep eyeballs on Facebook and sell more ads to more advertisers, Facebook has undergone yet another face lift. We’re not talking a Ben Roethlisberger-style face lift, either. The new Facebook profile has been redesigned to place more emphasis on photos, both yours and those you are tagged in, and the interests you share with your friends. It’s all part of Facebook’s plan to become an indispensable social tool in the modern era.
“You can see all the things that you have in common with that person,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg during last night’s 60 Minutes profile. “And it’s just like, it gives you this amazing connection with that person in a way that the current version of the profile that we have today just doesn’t do.”
So the wall posts and chronological time line are on the way out. On the way in are pictures, and lots of them, aimed at presenting a more complete picture of the Facebook user. You can list your most important friends, add special projects at work you’ve worked on for a sort-of brag book, and your most recent photos automatically display on your profile page, rather than requiring a few extra clicks to be uncovered. They’ve also added an interesting “See Friendship” link that shows just how your social networking contacts intertwine with one another.
