One of the hardest parts of any parade must be serving as a balloon handler. Those giant balloons aren’t easy to maneuver around in the best of weather, and given that those handlers are volunteers, it’s a miracle more balloons don’t find themselves damaged by high tension wires, street lights, road signs, and other overhanging nuisances. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, a centerpiece of Richmond, Virginia’s holiday parade, isn’t one of the lucky ones. After handler error, a gigantic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer balloon was accidentally impaled on a traffic light.
Looks like it won’t be a very merry Christmas this year.
I give the handlers all the credit in the world for nearly pulling this off. Unfortunately, the crowd wasn’t loud enough to notify the poor reindeer-horned handlers before Rudolph suffered a massive head wound and critical loss of helium. At least Rudolph lives on in the form of a beloved holiday special and some beloved holiday pork chops.
