Carl Crawford is the best defensive left fielder in Major League Baseball, bar none. He’s got solid hitting at the plate, blazing speed on the base paths, and even has a little power on his bat (he hit 19 home runs last year). He’s a four-time All Star and won the Gold Glove last season as a star on the over-achieving Tampa Bay Rays. Now, he’s packing up and heading north to Massachusetts. Carl Crawford signed a seven year, $142 million dollar contract to play for the Boston Red Sox.
If there’s one thing you can say about Theo Epstein, the Red Sox GM, it’s that he’s not afraid to go out and spend money. The signing of Crawford comes just a few days after the team traded for star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Manager Terry Franconia described his new left fielder last month as a “game-changer,” before adding, “He’s that guy that can change a game defensively, offensively. When he gets on base, he gives you a headache.”
Well congratulations, Red Sox fans. Now you’re going to be the team causing headaches, not receiving them. As for Carl Crawford, he’s getting paid a fortune to play in the easiest left field in baseball.
