Last month, I wrote about a movement. Forty years ago, after a particularly raucous show at Miami’s Key Auditoriums, front man of The Doors and all-around renaissance man Jim Morrison was arrested on charges on indecent exposure and a litany of other crimes. In spite of hundreds of witnesses who said Morrison never exposed himself, and hundreds of photographs which did not show Morrison exposing himself, Morrison was convicted of indecent exposure. Now, outgoing Florida governor Charlie Crist has overturned Morrison’s conviction, giving him an official pardon and clearing his record once again.
“Much controversy surrounds this conviction, and not only because many witnesses testified they did not see Mr. Morrison expose himself,” said Governor Crist, reading from a statement on behalf of Morrison. “Controversy also exists because Mr. Morrison was not arrested until four days after the concert. A case was brought against him only after newspaper articles recounted the alleged events at the concert, based on a complaint filed by an employee of the state attorney’s office who attended the concert.”
I’m sure if Jim wasn’t dead, he’d be thrilled to know he’s no longer listed on Florida’s sex offender registry.
