Last night’s football game between the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants was noteworthy for a few reasons. One of these reasons was the avalanche inside the Viking’s home dome, the HHH Metrodome. The other of these is Brett Favre stood on the sidelines in street clothes, not playing in a game for the first time since 1992. For 297 consecutive regular season games, or 321 consecutive games including the post season, Brett Favre did not miss a start. Brett Favre’s consecutive starts streak has been broken.
“It’s probably been long overdue,” said Favre, a 41-year-old grandfather, at a postgame news conference. “There’s probably been a lot of times the streak should have ended. . . . I just couldn’t play. I’ve played with a lot of stuff, but this is something different that I’ve got to be more cautious of. . . . I think it would be foolish to even consider playing if you don’t have total feeling in five fingers.”
It’s staggering when you consider just how long Favre played without missing a start, which allowed him to put up the gaudy stats he’s earned over the years. Favre leads the NFL in touchdowns, yards, and interceptions, among other things. There’s a good chance Favre’s season, and his NFL career, are over.
