One of the things I’ve noticed since I started to do work on Popfi is that the world is tied to Facebook. When Facebook goes down, then the entire world gets thrown into calamity (at least for some people). Here’s an example: overnight, Facebook was offline for a few minutes while Facebook engineers rolled out updates like the Facebook picture tagger and the new Facebook profiles. When I wake up, the entire world is freaking out about a few minutes of Facebook down time.
Are people this helpless without their new window to the world? Was it this bad back in the early 00’s when Yahoo would go offline for a few minutes? Or back in the 90’s when AOL was unavailable? Are people with otherwise functioning internet connections not able to entertain themselves without their FarmVille accounts for 15 minutes while Facebook performs database updates?
When you depend on one service for all your entertainment and socialization, you’re guaranteed to be screwed over in the end. Whether it’s Yahoo or Facebook or something else, don’t lean on one company for all your needs.
