Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark just might be the most interestingly bad musical in musical history, and that covers quite a bit of territory. However, it also might be the most unlucky theater performance since MacBeth, as things just keep doing wrong during the performances. The most recent incident was an accident where one of Spider-Man’s stunt performers fell 20-30 feet during the performance. The stunt performer, who was not Spider-Man actor Reeve Carney, was rushed to the hospital after the fall and the show was canceled for the evening.
“Spider-Man was on a bridge, and Mary Jane was dangling from it,” said Jonathan Dealwis, a tourist from New Zealand who was watching the show. “She drops down, as is meant to happen. Spider-Man went to the end of the bridge there. I think he was meant to sort of swoop over there, but he just fell off. … The harness, you could see it just flick off his back and fly backward.” Producers immediately scrambled to shield the audience from the accident, with Dealwis saying, “it just went black, and the producer came on and said we’re going to pause for a moment. You could hear Mary Jane weeping.”
Amazingly, the show isn’t officially open yet. This was another preview performance. You have to wonder, at this point, if the musical will even make it off the ground. Fortunately for the actor, he was taken to the hospital for observation and appears to be fine, aside from being a little shaken up.
