It’s like he-said she-said, except it’s he-sued she-sued. A warring former couple in Chicago, Illinois, have been doing battle in the court system for quite some time, and it’s only getting worse. Vito Salerno and Dominique Buttitta are suing one another over their broken engagement; Vito Salerno is suing to get back his $45,000 engagement ring while Dominique Buttitta is suing over nearly $100,000 in wedding expenses. The wedding was called off after details of the bachelor party were revealed to the bride.
Salerno says the break-up was mutual, saying that he felt pressured by the bride’s family to get a 3-carat engagement ring to compete with his mother-in-law’s 8-carat monstrosity and that he was in the dark about the wedding’s cost. Buttitta says her groom left her on the hook for $60,000 in unpaid wedding expenses and is planning on keeping her ring.
Here’s what I know from having watched all of the episodes of Bridezillas and Judge Judy I have watched. When a relationship is over, gifts stay gifts. Engagement rings are not gifts; she’ll have to return that ring to him. That’s my judicial opinion. As for my Bridezillas knowledge, I guarantee you he had no part in planning any of this wedding and had no idea how much money his bride-to-be was wasting on her big day.
